Report Contradicted

Officers of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association last night contradicted a statement that the total contribution of the public on Poppy Day was subject, to the social security contribution of 1/- in the £.

Mr ,J. Spence, secretary, confirmed the Wellington Association’s opinion by consultation with the New Zealand R.S.A. secretary, Mr J. Harrison. He said the public’s contribution was not taxed, but that if some money were paid out in wages, which was the case with only a very small sum in Wellington, the recipient must pay tax on such wages. Generally, funds raised on Poppy Day were tax-free, and the Social Security Act had not altered the position.
