Heavy Rain Continues in Northland

Persistent rain continued in Whangarei last night and again this morn-

The fall for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. today was .81 of an inch, making an aggregate of one and a half inches for the past two days, the first substantial downpour since January 29. Perceptibly cooler temperatures today lessens the degree of benefit to pasture growth, and the water is falling too rapidly to be absorbed by the ground, parched as it has been. Creeks are rising and torrents developing rapidly whore, a few hours ago, streams were trickling at drought level. In some districts rivers arc running bank high, although no flooding has been reported. The “Advocates” correspondent at Waiotira reports this morning that tanks, emptied weeks ago. are overflowing, ending the anxiety of farmers and householders who have been purchasing water by the gallon. Dust, which has been such a bugbear to motorists for the past three months, has disappeared in the face of the heavy rain, and where new formation work is in progress on highways cars are being given a mud bath. All routes were open at midday today, although the service car from Russell was three-quarters of an hour late arriving at Whangarei.
