Paparoa Institute Birthday Party
On Wednesday afternoon the Jubilee Hall, Paparoa, was the scene of a very happy gathering, the occasion being the eighth birthday party of the Paparoa Women’s Institute, Mrs. Efford, president for the current year, conducted proceedings, and, after the singing of the Institute “Ode,” gave a hearty welcome to visitors from surrounding Institutes; also to local visitors, expressing the hope that they would all soon become members.
On behalf of the Paparoa Institute,
Mrs. Wright, presented Mrs. Efford with a bouquet, conveying best wishes and wishing her a happy and successful term of office.
Otamatea Group.
Business in connection with the Otamatea Group meeting, which is to be held/ at Maungaturoto on May 3, was attended to. A suggestion from Paparoa Institute was “That all flowers in the. Women’s Institute section at the North Kaipara Show, be judged the day before the show, to give Institutes from a distance the same chance as near by.” , The “Roll Call” for the May meeting is to be “Recipes—without eggs or substitute—for cakes and biscluits.”
Business over, everyone joined in the rousing chorus, “The more we are together,” and other community songs. - Entertaining Items.
The following programme, including encores; Was then presented, every item bbing thoroughly enjoyed:— SongS, Mrs. McKay, “Coming Home,” and “The Dawn.” Competition by Mrs. W, Dodds, “Guessing the Name of a Member.” Several ladies tied.
Glees,, by a party of members: “Take me back to Old Virginia,” and "Ten Pretty Girls.” Old oldest member, Mrs. C. H, Jenkins took part in these. Lambeth Walk, by some members. Recitation by Miss Phillips, characterised as a tramp. Highland Dancing by Miss June Mason, “Sword Dance” and the “Highland Fling.” Vocal Duets by Misses Jessie Wilson and Mary Jenkins, “Let the Rest of the World go by,” and “Moonlight on the Colorado,”
A game, “Throwing the Rubber,” was won by Miss June Mason. Best-Dressed Doll.
Mr. Lindsay, of Maungaturoto, has kindly offered a prize to each of several Institutes, for the best-dressed doll—all the dolls eventually to be sent to the Wilson Home for Crippled Children.
Nine lovely dolls were entered, making, a pretty picture on the stage. The judges, Mrs. ' L, Worthington, difficulty in selecting the best. Miss Phillips’ entry gained first place the clothes being beautifully hand-worked, and Mrs. E. R. Jenkins second with a doll wearing beautifully knitted garments. ~ .• - ; .
A sumptuous afternoon tea was served by * the members—a special feature being the handsome birthday cake, made by Mrs. Dance and iced by tfttf secretary, Mrs. T. Wilson,
The Cake Is Cut.
One of the oldest members, Mrs J. H. Trounson, lighted the eight candles —which were blown out by the vicepresident, Miss Jessie Wilson—and cut the first piece of cake. Votes of thanks and appreciation were extended on the call of the president to all who so kindly contributed towards the success of the afternoon. After the usual thanks and best wishes from visiting Institutes, another happy birthday was brought to a close by the Ringing of the National Anthem. 7~ Officers for the current year are: — President: Mrs. Efford; vice-president: Miss J, Wilson; secretary: Mrs. T, Wilson; treasurer: Mrs. E.
