Like Snail — Unwilling
Schoolboys are notoriously unonthusiastic about spending more time than is essential within the precincts
of classrooms. Whangarei pupils, in common wth boys everywhere, do not hesitate to secure even a few minutes’ freedom from the bondage of the 1 scheduled curriculum. Something of this preference for youthful liberty seems to have dominated the instincts of a group of boys, who. f,_ ’ving from the country, were wending their way towards the school. Possessing the privilege of being late on account of the distance they had come, they appeared in no hurry to arrive at their place of learning. One boy seemed to be particularly resentful of the necessity for going to school. As his mates crossed the road to take a short-cut through the business area of the town, he stood disgustedly on the footpath, asking “What are you fellows taking shortcuts for? We’ve got all day yet.”
