Pakehas Want Protection

[Per Press Association. Copyright .l WELLINGTON. This Day. Stricter enforcement of the licensing laws was 'advocated by a deputation representing the New Zealand Women’s Christian Temperance Union. which waited upon the Minister in Charge of the Police Department, the Hon. P. Fraser, today. The union is holding its annual conference in Wellington, and the deputation comprised about 130 women, representing branches of the union from Whangaroi to Invercargill. The Minister said the licensing laws had never been more thoroughly and

more efficiently enforced than at present. The breaker of licensing laws Wad no more reason or justification for expecting immunity from the consequences of his actions than the breaker of any other laws. The Commissioner of Police, Mr D. J. Cummings, and the Director of education, Mr N. T. Lambourne, were present. iP* ?

The deputation was introduced by Mrs C. Stewart, M.P. for Wellington West. She said the deputation represented a band of women who realised fully the necessity for evolving a plan to protect people, especially young people, from the detrimental effects of the liquor traffic.

The Government has appointed Mr G. M. F. Jackson, Chief Clerk and Deputy-Registrar of Industrial Unions, to be associated with the Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone, as Government delegate to the International Labour Conference, to be held in Geneva in June. Mr Jackson has been closely connected with the work of the International Labour Organisation for

the past ten years, and has wide departmental knowledge of the subject to be dealt with at the conference.
