The Plunket Society
The monthly meeting of the Whangarei branch of tTie above society was held in the Mayor’s room on 21st inst. Present: Mesdames Thorne (in chair), Brake, Christiansen, Hart, Surman, E. W. Thomson, Armstrong, D. J. Thomson and Goodwin. Apologies were received from Mesdames W. Jones, Cummings and Stevenson. Acounts for £lB 17/8 were passed for _ payment, and incoming correspondence and outgoing was received and approved. Nurse Thomas’ report for February which w.as adopted, was as follows; New cases, adults, 26; babies, 23. Visits to homes, headquarters, 156; outstations, 15; visits to office, headquarters, I 467; outst.ations, 185. i
The following places were visited; Maungakarame.a. Waipu, Pipiwai, once each, and Hikurangi twice.
The health of babies and toddlers has been good. Thanks are due to Mesdames Clayton Thorne, McDonald (Princes Street), Pickmere (Hatea Street), Connell (Powhiri Avenue), and Finch (Mill Road), for flowers received for the rooms.
The committee decided to hold a battle bridge in April.
Remission of Rate Penally.
The 10 per cent, penalty would lose its terror if remitted in any cases, said Cr. L. J. Matthews at the Mangonui County Council meeting yesterday when an application was made for re- j mission. The county clerk said the j council had no power to remit the j penalty excepting in cases of hard- j ship. Every ratepayer had received two notices, and the penalty had been advertised in both papers circulating in the district.
