Young Farmers’ Club Judging Competitions

• Encouragement of young fanners in Ihe selection of stock was the object of the Young Farmers’ Club competitions in the Whangarei Stock Show. Judging fell into two categories, one for cattle and the other for pigs. Competitors were required to point up cattle, and to place in their order four pigs selected from the entries in the National Bacon Pig On-the-Hoof Championship. Kneebone said that ; some of the reasons given by club : members were particularly good, j According to his judgment, pig No. 5 was first. A very good pig, it had good back hams and sides, though it was a little short for its weight. Pig No. 27, in his estimation, was worth second place. It was a good type, but had a rather fatter ham than No. 5, and was heavier in the bone.

Pig No. C was rather light in the ham and was short for its weight. Its chief fault, however, was excess of fat on the back. Mr Kneebone placed this pig third. The pig placed fourth (No. 3) was short, fat and heavy. Results of the young farmers’ pigjudging competition were:—H. Agnew (Matarau) 1, T. McKegg (Matarau) Dairy Cow Judging In the judging competition for members of Young Farmers’ Clubs throughout Northland at the Whangarei Show, places were awarded as follows.— Tom McKegg 1, W. A. Rushbrook 2, I. D. Bodle 3, H. G. Agnew 4. All the above are members of the Matarau Young Farmers’ Club.
