Excellent Double Feature At Regent

The best double feature programme to be shown at Whangarei for some time is that at present screening at the Regent Theatre.

“Gateway,” the first film on this delightful programme, is a modern and topical drama, dealing with the drift of political refugees from Europe to America, and how they look forward to the United States to give them the safety, protection and love that their bodies and hearts crave for.

Starring Don Ameche and Arleen Whelan (the most popular pf the newcomers), the cast also includes Gregox'y Ratoff, Binnie Barnes. Gilbert Roland, Raymond Walburn, John Carradine and a host of other players whose names have repeatedly flashed into the news in other great successes such as “Gateway.” It would not be hard to fill columns describing the human drama of this film, which will be remembered as one of the screen’s triumphs, but it is sufficient to say that all living in a democratic country should see this film at least once.

Rare comedy, as can only be supplied by Joan Blondell and Melvyn Douglas, is to be found in the second big feature. “There’s Always a Woman.” With Mary Astor, Frances Drake and Jerome Cowan in the fine supporting cast, the story is of the greatest detective in town who has to have his wife detect his most important crime. “There’s Always a Woman” is truly a film to be enjoyed by old and young alike.
