Bowling Title To Whitelaw

The final of the single-handed bowling championship of the Whangarei Bowling Club took place on the club’s top green last evening between M. Whitelaw, holder, and T. Brewis, holder of the North Auckland Centre title.

There was a good gallery of spectators and they were by no means disappointed, as both players produced their best form to put on a magnificent exhibition of bowls, exploiting every shot in the game. Brewis held two lives and Whitelaw one, which meant that the latter was faced with the hard task of defeating his opponent twice. However, Whitelaw proved equal to the occasion, winning the first game by a point and the second by a margin of three points. The first game was evenly contested right up to the last head, and the second match was also evenly contested, although Brewis assumed an early lead of five or six points, but by the time half the game had gone, Whitelaw had drawn level.

On reaching the last head Brewis required four to tie, but Whitelaw kept the scoring down to a single and thus retained the title.

Brewis exploited the draw shot with deadly effect, occasionally flashing a fast one through the head to good .advantage, especially when the position was hopelessly congested.

Whitelaw on the other hand was more aggressive and used a battery of shots during both games, his versatility proving a match-winning factor. His drawing was excellent throughout, but in this department Brewis was more steady, and was unfortunate in not annexing the club championship which Whitelaw has won three years in succession and four times at intervals. Night Pairs. Last evening a full green was occupied in a pairs tourney under electric light. The usual 21 heads were played for the first game and each subsequent game was of five heads. The final took place between E Woledge and Geo. Wilding v. A. Barraball and L. Nesbitt, the former pair winning by six points to four.
