North Auckland Tournament

Play North Auckland Bowling Tournament commenced on the Whangarei Club’s greens this morning.
The president, Mr J. H. Marwick, opened proceedings when he welcomed the large number of visitors. He wished them all success and good bowling, and hoped that the tournament would prove very enjoyable for all competitors.
Teams were present from the Kikurcngi, Dargaville, and Kensington clubs, as well as two teams from Auckland.
Kelly’s team from the Balmoral Club, who were victorious last season, and who hold the Campbell Cup, were present. A well-known player south of Auckland, “Bronco” Bright, had brought a good team from the Otahuhu club, this being the first occasion on which this club had visited Whangarei. Kaitaia, who in the past had regularly fielded a team, had not entered for this year’s tournament.
The first round commenced at 9 a.m

Nelson, J. Wilson, McLeod (s) (Whangarei) 13; Cleverley, Martin, Clark, Courtney (s) (Whangarei) 24, Bain. Telfer, Fleming, Littlejohn (s) (Whangarei) 16; H. Doel, C. Doel, Staple, Walder (s) (Kensington) 23, Hutchings, Morrish, Piggott, Curtis (s) (Kensington) 22; Hill, Appleton, D. Williams, Greville (s) (Dargaville) 18, Johnson Jnr., Woods, Scott, Johnson Snr. (s) (Hikurangi) 13; Sissons, Spedding, Huy ton, McDonald (s) (Hikurangi) 18, McKinnon, Whitehead, Englund, Everett (s) (Whangarei) 16; Kay, Gilespie, Ross, T. H. Wilson (s) (Portland) 27, Dennis, H. Wilson, Stewart, Wildmg (s) (Whangarei) 16; Lee, McDonnell, Bright, Harper (s) (Otahuhu), secured the bye.
Two more rounds are being played this afternoon and the tourney will conclude tomorrow.
Holders Meet Defeat.
Balmoral players, holders of the Campbell Rose Bowl, the trophy at this tournament, s were defeated in a very close contest against Hikurangi in the first round this morning, after an extra head had beeiji played. The game was very closely contested throughout, both teams having 16 at the 21st head, Balmoral having gained two in that head. The final winning point came to Hikurangi in the extra head.
