Customs Revenue Increase

C Special to “Northern Advocate ” 3 AUCKLAND, This Day.

Substantial advances were recorded in all branches of the revenue collected by the Customs Department at Auckland last month, compared with February of the previous year. The effects of the import restrictions have not yet been felt. Customs revenue last month was £317,895, an increase, of £43,167, compared with February, 1938. There was a yield of £79,731 from the motor spirit tax, an' advance of £8323 on February, 1938, while £3526 was collected from tyre duty compared with £1129.

Although below January’s unusually large collection, sales tax produced £80,963, which is £11,708 ahead of the corresponding month last year. Excise on beer, amounting to £19,967, was £2600 ahead of February, 1938. Wellington^—The Customs revenue collections at Wellington continue at a high level. The net revenue collected in February shows a sharp increase of £42,690, compared with a decrease in the January figures of £34,124.

The figures for the past month, with those for February, 1938, are; Net Customs revenue, February, 1939, £304,761; February, 1938, £262,071. Motor spirit: £43,964; £43,272. Tyre tax: £2122; £lll9. Sales tax: £89,932; £81,994. Beer excise: £6136; £6649.

Christchurch.— Although the revenue collected by the Customs Department in Christchurch this month was £28,263 higher than in February last year, the collection for 11 months of the financial year is £26,452 less than for the corresponding period last year. Details for February are: Customs, 1938, £85,154; 1939, £104,202. Beer duty: £7284; £10,114. Petrol tax: £23,861; £25,996. Tyre tax: £688; £1760. Sales tax: £32,259; £34,653.
