Queen Carnival as Feature of Whangarei Centennial Drive
AS ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL METHODS OF RAISING FUNDS FOR WHANGAREPS SHARE IN THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS, A QUEEN CARNIVAL IS TO BE HELD. A recommendation' to this'effect made by the Finance SubrCommittee was adopted by Sub-Zone A 5 (Whan garei) Committee last night. That badges be sold for £1 each, which would exclude the wearer from further contributions, was another re commendation from the Finance SubCommittee. The period of the Carnival will be four months. Mr R. H. Allan has been appointed organiser at a salary of £5 per .week. Ofi acceptance of the position, he has .agreed to resign from the . position of chairman of I;he Pageantr y Committee, which he at present occupies. Messrs O’Donoghue and Cooke have been appointed to represent the Finance Sub-Committee on the Queen Carnival executive. DIRECT CONTRIBUTIONS. Following the lead given by the staff of the “Northern Advocate”, and Borough Council clerical staff, employees are to be approached regarding making a donation of Id in the £1 from their salaries. In the event'Of the employees deciding upon such a donation, employers are to be asked to agree to deduct the amount each pay day. Principals of the firms will be asked either for donations or to subsidise the donations made by their employees. (A recommendation that the funds collected in this manner during the carnival be applied to the appropriate queen war- held over for consideration when plans for the carnival are further advanced. Enquiries are also being made whether permission can be obtained
for an art union
