Canterbury Head Cahn’s Englishmen

CRICKET

[Per Press Association. Copyright.'] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The loss of three wickets in the first over of Canterbury’s second innings was the sensation of the third day's play in the cricket match against Sir Julien Cahn’s team, which was concluded at Lancaster Park yesterday, the game ending in a draw. The fast-medium Surrey bowler, Watts, did the damage. His first delivery accounted for Menzies, Hadlee was brilliantly caught in the slips off his third and the seventh clean bowled Anderson. A fourth wicket stand by Donnelly and Shand, which added 91, retrieved Canterbury’s position and after some bright batting the innings realised 233.

Hardstaff Saves Day. Sir Julien Cahn’s XL, which continued itc innings from Saturday, carried its total to 410, giving Canterbury a lead of 54 runs. Hardstaff and Heane increased their sixth wicket stand to 159, the total being 309 when Heane was caught behind the wickets for 67. Hardstaff finished with 180. He had been in while 343 runs were added and undoubtedly saved his side, although he did take a long time to make his runs. The day was brilliantly fine, and if the scoring was not always fast there was plenty of excitement for the fair crowd that attended. The gate takings were £7O, making £5lO for the three days. Details of the scores.—
