Progress Towards New Winter Show Grounds

Further steps are being taken in connection with the acquirement, of land for a Whangarei Winter Exhibition’s new home. The Winter 'Show Exhibition Committee has been negotiating with the j Whangarei Harbour Board for the j lease of an area of about 14 acres of reclaimed land, known as the Hihiaua 1 Reclamation, for the purpose of erect- j ing new buildings for the exhibition, i Situated to the east of Lower Wal- j ton Street, the suggested new site is i at no great distance from the present i Winter Exhibition buildings. Conference Held. A conference between x’epresentatives of the Harbour Board and the Show Committee has been held, and at this conference Mr H. W. James, president of the Whangarei A. and P. Society, stated that the Minister of Finance, Hon. Walter Nash, had been j approached, and he had advised that 1 the harbour board engineer, the dis- | trict engineer to the Public Works Department, and the show committee, go into the matter and draw up ,a scheme for submission to the Government.

The question of financial assistance would then be considered. At a meeting of the harbour board last week it was decided that the engineer, Mr W. M. Fraser, be empowered to act as suggested by the Minister, and that the leasing of the area concerned be considered.
