Bay of Islands Zone Makes Inspiring Centennial Progress
\ MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE OF THE BAY OF ISLANDS SUBA ZONE A 4 WAS HELD AT OHAEAWAI RECENTLY, THE CHAIRMAN, MR H. T. ATKINSON PRESID ING OVER AN ATTENDANCE OF 23 MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE. The chairman of each of the 14 sub-committees, with one exception, were present, and each one reported upon the activities of his sub committee since the last meeting. 1 In almost every case the chairman was able to report that progress had been made.
The chairman of the Programme and Pageantry Committee, Mr H. K. Hatrick, reported at length upon the programme which the committee had drawn up, an outline of which Will be published at a later date.
Attractive Pageantry
January 29, 1940 was the date originally selected for carrying out the pageantry programme on the Waimate North show grounds.
It was suggested at the meeting, however, that if It could be held a few days closer up to the re-enactment of the signing of the Treaty of Waltangi on February 6. Special trains and steamers would bring large numbers of people to see it.
In this case visitors would probably be willing to wait in the district for two or three days for the Treaty function if accommodation could be found.
It was decided to reconsider the question of date for the pageantry.
District Memorials
Mr Black read a lengthy report upon features selected by his sub-committee for inclusion in the Northland film.
A long discusion ensued as to whether the whole of Sub Zone A 4 would have one county memorial, or whether each district would have a memorial of its own. Finality on this question could not bo reached, and it was therefore decided to adjourn the meeting for a few days and complete the discussion after those interested had had time to consider it further.
Complimented on Progress
The chairman of Zone A, Mr W. Jones, complimented Mr Atkinson and Sub Zone A 4 Committee, for the splendid progress they had made in their organisation.
*TI has been an inspiration to me to be present and to see such splendid work being done,” he said.
s 'The chief thing behind the whole movement," said Mr Jones, ‘‘is the creation of a good spirit, not only between the members of each individual zone, but between all the zones as well. "If everyone was willing to give and take, and abide by the will of majorities, a splendid spirit would prevail throughout. .” He was quite sure that everyone who entered into the preparations for the Centennial did so in that spirit.
