Kaitaia Young Farmers Discuss Pig-Judging
The Kaitaia Young Farmers’ Club held its meeting in Foster’s room on Monday evening, when there were 31 members present.
Business of the meeting was to discuss competitions in which young farmers can compete at the forthcoming Show. Judging Competition.
In the young farmers’ bacon pig judging competition five pigs are to be placed in order of merit. In this competition members of any young farmers’ club are eligible to compete. A cup has been donated by the Kaitai’a Young Farmers’ Club to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals . before, becoming . the property of any competitor. Mr W. A. Beattie, supervisor to the Northland District Pig Council, has donated a miniature cup for the winner of this competition. ’ Mr Beattie’s Address.
Mr Beattie gave an address on bacon pig judging, using diagrams showing both the wrong and correct types. He said in the past judges had placed pigs first that had good hams. Today, points for the hams represent nearly a tenth of the points allotted for the side of the pig. Valuable Competitions.
Mr Beattie mentioned the National Bacon Pig Championship of New Zealand and the Northland Porker Pig Championship, stating that competitions such as these are going to help the pig industry tremendously by encouraging farmers to breed the right type of pig. Mr Beattie was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
The next meeting of tlie club will be held on March 13.
