Cost of Port Water Supply Scheme

To lay a four-inch water main to Port Whangarei from the borough boundai’y will cost £9BO, using iron pipes. Using the new “Fibrolite” pipes the cost will be £B9O. The length of piping required will be 5850 feet. This information was supplied to the Whangarei Harbour Board by the secretary-engineer, Mr W. M. Fraser, at the board’s monthly meeting. Mr Fraser had been instructed at the January meeting of the board to inquire into the cost of the project.* Liable to Corrosion, Mr E. L. Whimp pointed out that iron water pipes laid to Onerahi had shown themsqlves subject to corrosion from the spoil dredged from the harbour. As the Port Whangarei supply pipes would be laid in similar formation, he recommended the use of the “Fibrolite” type. Mr Fraser explained that the “Fibrolite” pipe was of concrete-asbestos construction, and seemed to be the pipe of the future. The board directed that further information as to the suitability of the new form of piping should be obtained before action was taken.
