Champions Kept In Check

Very steady bowling by Masters and. Wilson kept Onerahi well in check and it looked in the early stages as if the champion’s colours were to be lowered by their nearest * competitors. With five wickets down fojt dnly half ,a century, hopes of anything like a reasonable stand appeared slight. Whangarei’s fielding .was consistent, in keeping with the bowling, which was entrusted to the initial two bail-seekers.

A good strike by J. Drake (33) gave Onerahi some courage and when W. Whimp went in he helped several fellow batters to stem what promised to be a general collapse.

The score would have been nearer 100 than 150 if the bails had not played tricks with Wilson. He delivered a fast ball to Bowman, but, although it audibly struck the wickets, the bails refused to part company with the uprights and another 40 rims were oh before the partnership with Whimp was broken.

Placing caution before expediency Whangarei batted at a moderate pace up to stumps, and was then within easy striking distance of Onerahi with five wickets still in hand. Scores were.— ONERAHI.
