Fitness Week in Whangarei Launched At Kensington Park

CONSIDERING THE SHORTNESS OF TIME AVAILABLE FOR ARRANGEMENTS, PUBLIC INTEREST RAN FAIRLY HIGH FOR THE OPENING OF WHAN OARERS PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK CAMPAIGN ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON, In brilliant summer weather an outdoor programme was conducted at Kensington Park before a fair gallery. The afternoon commenced with the parade from the lower end of the town to the park, headed by the Municipal Band, and including basketball and hockey teams, an excellent decorated float by the North Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, and decorated trade vehicles, cars and caravans, all emphasising the physical fitness motif. Basketball and. Hockey. i Basketball and hockey exhibitions formed the main attraction at the park, and although the summer heat proved trying to the players, and lack of practice in winter sports had its effect, creditable displays were given.

The hockey match between Hora Hora and Old Girls resulted in a draw, each team gaining two goals. Scorers for Hora Hora were E. Pitman and A. Marshall, and for Old Girls B. Brown and H. Ruddell. Messrs R. Nixey and A. J. Magee were umpires. In the basketball, Old Girls beat High School 9—4. The girls highly enjoyed their game, although somewhat hampered by long grass. Miss Claire Bosselman was referee. Bands Turn Out.

Selections were played by the Municipal Band during the afternoon, while the Whangarei County Pipe Band, the members of which appeared in new uniforms, made a highly popular appearance, playing several selections and giving an exhibition of drill. Impromptu races for young people and adults, - with a special “kilties’ ” race for members of the Pipe Band, added to the interest of the day.

Barnaby’s Radio House supplied an electric amplifying unit for announcing purposes.
