Jeanette Disqualified After Winning 18-Footer Race

The Auckland boat Jeanette, after she had finished first yesterday afternoon in the second race of the world’s 18-footer championship series, was disqualified by the judges. It was stated by the umpires that in forcing a passage round the Shoal Bay mark during the first round of the course, contrary to the provision of the rules, Jeanette struck with her forestay the St. George’s boom, about four feet from the end.

No protest regarding the incident was lodged by the Australian boat, according to a statement by the manager of the visiting team, Mr F. Empson, last night. % “I wish to state that any action that has been taken came from the initiative of the umpires, who -were two New Zealande men,” Mr Empson said. “An incident did occur, but there was certainly no protest lodged by the Australians.” •

The race started at 3.8 p.m. The finishing times were.— Jeanette, 4hrs. 47mins. 18secs.; St. George, 4hrs. 48mins. 33secs.; Taree. 4hrs. 49mins. 25secs.; Vaalele, 4hrs. 49mins. 35secs.; Arline, 4hrs. 49mins. 53secs.; Limerick, 4hi’s. SOmins. 44secs.; Manu, 4hrs. Slmins. 41secs.; Irina, 4hrs. 52mins. 9sccs.; Riptide, 4hrs. 53mins.; Manene. 4hrs. 53mins. 48secs. The remainder of the boats were further astern, and their times were not taken. The official placings, following the disqualification of Jeanette, were as follows. —•

St. George (Sydney) 1. Taree (Sydney) 2. Vaalele (Richmond Cruising Club) 3, Arline (Wakatere Boating Club) 4.

The total points for the first two races are as follows: Manu, 270; St. George, 255; Taree, 158; Jeanette. 127; Vaalele, 126; Arline, 38; Manene, 16; Mercedes, 3; Riptide, 3; Irina, 3; Manaia, 1.

The final race is being sailed today, and was due to commence at 3 p.m.
