Flooded Mine Resumes This Week-End
There appears every prospect that the hope of the management of the Hikurangi Coal Company for the resumption of production at the mine this week-end will be fulfilled. The long task of dewatering the mine since the new shaft was flooded last November is now nearing its end. By the middle of the week the water had been reduced to such a low level that it was possible to begin preparations for taking coal from the affected shaft, and it is understood that several miners resumed work at the mine in the past few dayg, with the prospect of more being re-employ-ed this week-end. Throughout the period of the flooding it has been possible to take sufficient coal from another shaft to keep the mine’s boilers fired, but the next few days should see commercial production commenced once more.
