More Beer Imported In December
There was an increase of nearly eight tons in the quantity of beer landed at Whangarei during December of last year, as compared with the j same month of 1937. Apart from coal, beer and wine headed the list of imports for the month, received at yesterday’s meeting of the Whangarei Harbour Board. The tonnage for the month was 1973 tons, compared with 190 tons in December, 1937. Some 2016 tons of coal were landed during the month, compared with 2620 for the same month of the previous year. Trade Improves Other import figures were: Flour, 127 tons (150 tons); manures, 13 tons (6 tons); motor spirit, .106/ tons (96/ tons). ' Among the exports, butter rose from 456 tons in December, 1937, to 570 tons; and cement from 6317 tons to 7504/tons. Kauri gum decreased from 6J tons to li tons, but lime rose from 144 to 207 tons.
Mr Chamberlain presided yesterday afternoon over the Cabinet sub-com-mittee dealing with Foreign Affairs and defence matters, which was attended by Sir John Simon, Viscount Halifax, Mr Hore Belisha, Sir Kingsley Wood, Sir Thomas Inskip, Mr Oliver Stanley and the First Lord of the Admiralty, Earl Stanhope, while Sir Robert Vansittart was also present.
