Northlanders Play in Auckland Provincial Tennis Tourney

GUNN IN THE QUARTER-FINALS OF THE MEN’S OPEN SINGLES WHEN SENIOR PLAY IN CONNECTION WITH THE AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS STARTED SHORTLY BEFORE 1 O’CLOCK THIS AFTERNOON. The Northland juniors, who toured the district, are playing for the first time. '' Pountney is holder! of the Dannevirke. Wanganui and Manawatu singles titles, and has already eliminated J. Roach and Livingstone, tVaikato s number one and number two ranking players. A. S. Burns, junior title champion, succeeded in straight sets in the same section as W. T. Pountney, and the possibility of these two meeting in later rounds was a subject of speculation.
Outdriving his opponent and him at the net, J. W. Gunn started well in his match against W. T. Pountney. Gunn Defeats Pountney The first game went to Gunn off his servo, and Pountney, putting force into angled shots, squared at one all. Gunn took the next three games in a row before Pountney drew up to make the score 4 —3 against him. Gunn, placing well, had no trouble in taking the next two games and set at 6 —3. R. H. Lewis’ brilliant retrieving in the first set of his game with N. F. Bedford enabled him to rattle his opponent, who was obviously disconcerted by his inability to reach Lewis’ fierce cross-court swings.

Lewis jumped to a 5—3 lead, Bedford took a game, and then Lewis’ outstanding service took him ahead again to a B—4 victory. Northland Juniors Playing Results were:—

The quarter-final matches in the ladies’ singles at the annual provincial championship tournament of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association were decided yesterday afternoon. The following four players remain to contest the semi-finals to-morrow afternoon: Miss M. Beverley (Matamata), holdqr of the title; Miss N. Beverley (Matamata); Miss B. L. Bishop (Auckland); Miss E. Plummer (Hawke’s Bay). Miss Plummer will meet Miss N. Beverley, and Miss Bishop will oppose Miss M. Beverley. The eight who are contesting the quarter-finals of the men’s singles this afternoon are: R. H. Lewis, N. F. Bedford. J. W. Gunn, W. T. Pountney, R. W. Smith, N. G. Sturt, and J. T. Mayson, all of Auckland, and R. G. Pattinson, of Canterbury. Match Scores. Results were:—
