Souvenir Seekers Raid Rescue Boat
CAVALIER TRAGEDY
(Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 24. Scenes of wild disorder marked the arrival of the oil tanker, Esso Baytown with the 10 survivors of the Imperial Airways flying boat Cavalier. The crowd fought the police, who Anally gave up, and 1500 men and women swept aboard and took posession of the tanker. They, ran through alleyways, ripped open cabin doors and invaded the hold and engine room seeking souvenirs. A telegraph boy was crushed under the gangway and severely injured. The survivors of the Cavalier paid tribute to the heroism of Mr. Robert Spence, the steward who was drowned.
Died Heroically. Injured, and without a lifebelt, Mr. Spence ran to and fro encouraging the weary, adjusting slipping lifebelts, massaging stiff muscles and wiping off ffrostbite. Then, exhausted, Tie Slipped from sight. , The first officer, Mr. Neil Richardson, when sharks were attracted by the blood from those who had been injured, said: “They are scared of their own shadows. Look!” And he swam towards them splashing and shouting.
