Broadcast Royalties Deemed Excessive
(Received 11.30 a.m.) MELBIURNE, This Day. The Postmaster General, Mr A. G. Cameron, refused to renew the agreement between the Performing Rights’ Association and the Australian Broadcasting Commission on the ground of alleged excessive royalties collected'by the Performing Rights Association. He* says the Association levies three forms of royalties, for copyright recorded music, covering listeners’ licenses, national broadcasting stations and music played by commercial stations in hotels and cafes. This unprecedented action results
in approximate collection by the associ; * at ion in Australia of £60,000 a year, compared with Canada, where the number of stations and licenses are slightly in excess of Australia, which pays £23,000. Mr Cameron regards the matter as one for Government intervention, and is acting accordingly.
