Destructive Blaze On Mt. Pirongia

[Special to “Northern - Advocate ” 3 TE AWAMUTU, This Day. A serious fire which occurred on the slopes of Pirongia mountain during the week-end resulted in the destruction of 40,000 young trees planted by the Te Awamutu Borough Council staff on the municipal water supply catchment area. Although the cause of the fire has not been definitely ascertained, the borohgh foreman, Mr R. H. Clpse, who inspected the locality, says that there is evidence that the fern was set alight in five different places. When Mr Close and others arrived on the scene, the fire had too great a hold to be extinguished. The area is a favourite resort ol picnickers during the summer months, but it is not known if any were there during tlie week-end.
