Fire Threat To Puketi Forest
Strenuous efforts averted a serious threat to the Puketi State Forest yesterday when fire in fern, scrub and gorse. driven by a high wind, swept towards the edge of the reserve. It is understood that in one spot fire entered the fringe of the bush. About. 500 acres of gorse and scrub were burnt.
The State Forest Officer, Mr. J. Ogle, led a party of nine men in control efforts, and Mr. Sexton, a surveyor to the Forest Department, also directed a gang of men. Successful Back-Burning. By back-burning areas of scrub, it was possible to make fire breaks which checked the flames in their sweep towards the forest.
The area concerned in the burn is bisected by the Okaihau-Kaeo road, and one party of motorists ing from Kaeo to Kaikohe, were forced back by the heat and the flames. Fire-fighters were on duty all night, and this morning it was reported that ,all danger to the forest had passed.
