Statutory Holidays This Year. Following are the dates of statutory holidays to be observed this year:— Easter, April 7 to 10 (Friday to Monday inclusive); Anzac Day, Tuesday, April 25; King’s Birthday, Monday, June 5; Labour Day, Monday, October 23; Christmas Day, Monday, December 25; Boxing Day, Tuesday, December 26. , $ * * * Patients At Hospital. Including , nine in the maternity annexe, there were 54 patients receiving treatment at the Whangarei District Hospital at the end of December, At the end of November there were 78 patients in hospital, including 11 in the annexe, and 150 patients were. admitted during December (28 in the annexe), while 167 were discharged (30 from 'annexe). Six patients died during the months » => * * Holiday Traffic in Hokianga. Traffic through, Hokianga over the Christmas and New Year holidays was the heaviest ever known. Many New Zealanders have come North this season and it has been gratifying to notice that most people have taken a keen interest in the historical asspects of the North. They have respected the sacred nature of many native burial grounds, which (are always considered tapu. The roads have suffered in consequence of the heavy traffic and most highways are in need of attention, reports ourj Kohukohu correspondent. 3
Quieter Lamb and Sheep Market. Activities on ,tlle lamb, japd buying market in hpt as brisk as in previous years. This, is due mainly to the depletions following the outbreak of facial eczema lasi autumn, and the large numbers of lambs and sheep that were sent from Northland to fill gaps in southern flocks. The season also has adversely affected the market. However, most stock agents are kept busy buying «on, .-the, Sheep market, and are expected to be .occupied in this ,way throughout thb mbnth.
Bandsmen’s Car Breaks Down. That there are not more behziiie bowsers available in the country districts of Northland is bemoaned, this morning by members of Ces. Wright’s band. Returning from an engagement at Russell late last night, the band’s motor-car developed spirit ■ trouble. The break-down occurred on the Whangarei side of Helena Bay.. .The nearest benzine pump was at Whakapara —a distance of ten miles. Redcoated bandsmen scoured the countryside in search of benzine, but several farmers, awakened from their sleep, were unable to oblige. Eventually the trouble was tracked down to a blocked benzine pump on the car, and after a bandsman-mechanic had effected repairs the party reached Whangarei literally with the milkman this morning.
