Features Of Monday’s Play

The annual championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued yesterday. Five rounds were played on various city and suburban greens, and there were 406 competitors. At the conclusion of yesterday’s play there were 76 survivors, 26 of whom are two-lifers.

Play in the singles competition was continued on four greens this morning. The remaining 26 two-lifers met on the Carlton green, where one match between one-lifers was played. The other one-lifers will play at the Epsom, Auckland and Mt. Eden greens.

The feature of yesterday’s play in the singles competition was the high standard, which surpassed that seen at any previous national championship tournament. :

The holder of the. singles title, W. D. Bennett, of Hastings, who 'won the event in Dunedin last year, was eliminated from' the competition in the fourth round, when J. Kerr, Onehunga, gave him his second loss in a game which resulted in. a score of 23-17 against the champion. Bennett, who was at Rawhiti, won his first game against W. W. Edgerley, New Lynn, rather easily, but lost his first life to E. Moloney, Gisborne, in the second round, by 25-12. Whitelaw’s Revenge.

An instance of two old opponents meeting was in the contest between M. Whitelaw, Whangarei, and R. Buchan, Rawhiti, formerly of the Northern club, where he was holder of the singles championship. Buchan had previously defeated Whitelaw in the final of the North Auckland Bowling Centre’s champion of champions contest in 1937. .

A great game resulted when the pair met yesterday on the Te Papa green in the fourth round, victory going to Whitelaw by 19-13. Whitelaw thus had four wins on end, and so earned the bye in the fifth round. How Play Went, Results:— Section A, at Epsom.—Third round: McPhail 16 v. Holland 15.
