M.C.C. made 518 for six wickets and declared. Hutton made 202. Paynter 99, Hammond 52, Edrich 31 and Bartleet, not out. 33. Hutton and Paynter trounced the weak bowling, the former batting for 167 minutes. His tally included two sixes and 23 boundaries. Bartleet hit the fast bowler Ferreira for five consecutive fours.
