Voluntary National Service Under Fire
LONDON, December 17. The debate on the proposals for organising voluntary national service will be resumed in the House of Commons on Tuesday. ' The following motion has been tabled by the Government: “That the House, recognising that, the taking of measures to protect the lives and homes of the people at all times transcends in importance all party differences, welcomes the Government’s decision to rely upon the voluntary services of the people, but recommends that the results of the scheme for national service proposed by the Government be reviewed by the House at the end of March.’’ The decision of the Government to review at the end of March the results of the scheme has aroused keen interest in political circles, particularly among Conservative critics of the voluntary system. “The Times” says some of these critics will regard the new motion as a concession to their point of view, but it anticipates that others will still persist with amendments in favour of a compulsory scheme.
