Unfair Trading Alleged At Awanui
George Devich. of Awanui. was charged, in the Mangonui Police Court, on information from the Labour Department, with having failed to close his shop at 1 p.m. on the statutory half-holiday.
It was stated by the inspector that defendant conducted a shop in which various foods were sold. On Thursday. November 10. the shop was kept under observation, and it was open at 7.30 p.m. From 7.50 to 8.5 p.m., five persons entered the shop, and two were children. Ho heard the cash register ring twice, and saw a bottle handed to a young woman. He also saw. magazines being shown to ,a girl. The proceedings were brought on account of the unfair trading. There had been many complaints of laxity at Awanui.
Replying to Mr Reynolds, who appeared for defendant, the inspector raid the proceedings had been taken a lesson to others. The defendant lived on the premises, and the front door may be used as a private entrance. The two children may have been the children of defendant. A fine of £1 with costs 15/- was imposed.
