W.E.A. Domininon Conference
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] DUNEDIN. This Day. 'l'ho annual Dominion conference of delegates of the Workers’ Educational Association, was held on Thursday. The growth of the association since its formation in 1915. when there were 429 members enrolled, was traced by the Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, who officially welcomed the delegates. The following resolution was carried; “That the Dominion Council bo instructed to bring to the notice of the Government the need for securing a suitable building in each of the four main centres to serve as a home for Hie Workers* Educational Association and kindred organisations." The following motion was also carried; ‘‘That, in pursuance of the recommendation of the youth work committee, which was adopted by the Dominion conference of 1937, the Government be asked to investigate the practicability and desirability of modifying tlie secondary' educational system with a view to giving to apprentices and other adolescents the opportunity of dividing their working time .between schooling and earning a living, schooling to include social and cultural as well as vocational subjects, and the whole problem to be explored by a committee representing economists, educationalists, psychologists, business people, and employees.” Mr H. D. Acland (Canterbury) was elected president.
