Local Scouts Prepare For World Fellowship
Ten thousand Boy Scouts from all over the world will be encamped at Bradfield, Sydney, during Christmas and New Year - . The party will include 600 from New Zealand, eight of these being from., Northland. b Preparatory work has taken months of effort of the local representatives. Scoutmaster G. W. Sharman, of the Hora Hora Group, shouldered the responsibility on his own initiative of carving the decorated frontage for the Ruketea Troop quarters, this troop being in Mr Sharman’s charge. It will consist of 25 Scouts and four officers. Modern Carver. Four weeks of concentrated carving have been required to produce Mr Sharman’s finished product. It is a fine piece of craftsmanship, modelled from the, design of a Maori meetinghouse. depicted on a cigarette card. Hora, Hora Scouts have contributed painted posts, in Maori design, to add to the effectiveness of the entrance. Mr Sharman’s only tools were a pocket knife and a chisel, and the completed work was the subject of admiring remarks by the large number of visitors who saw it today. The tbtara timber, when oiled, makes a Very good appearance in its genuine Maori design.
Heavy Portage. / Scouts taking part in the Jamboree have a big list of things to be taken With them. The officer in charge of each- troop must arrange for tents, cooking gear, first-aid equipment, etc. The whole New Zealand contingent Will wear a special uniform for the otcasion. •A busy week-end lies ahead for Mr Sharman and his mother, Mrs A. H. Sharman, Cub Commissioner for Northland. By Monday they must have all their gear packed ready for the express journey to Auckland, whence they will sail in the Awatea for the Jamboree on Tuesday, at 5 p.m. Valuable Experience, - Previous experience is holding them both in good stead, Mr Sharman attended the Melbourne Jamboree in .1334 and the Adelaide gathering in 11336. HMrs Sharman, who will be in charge g| the party of New Zealand lady <?ub officers, atetnded the Melbourne function.. ; Profiting by his previous experience, Mr Sharman has 'assured that the local representatives will have an ample supply of souvenirs for exchanging with Scouts from other countries. These include tikis, totems, carved paper-knives, and a host of other small articles which Will ultimately find their way to different parts of the world in exchange for foreign curios. Scouts Are Brothers, The Jamboree is, being held in celebration of the New South Wales Sesquicentenary. It will provide an opportunity for a meeting of Boy Scouts from all parts of the world. They Will gather together with one object —the stimulation of brotherliness among all nations, and the creation of
bends of fellowship and friendshipbonds which the world could well tie 'at the pre'sent moment. With Mrs Sharman and Mr Sharman will go Arthur Maunsell and Lindsay Johnson, of Horn Hora Troop; Graeme Beere, First Whangarei Troop, and John Davison and Brett Cooksey, of Dargaville. Scoutmaster Philpott left yesterday for Auckland.
