New Zealanders Stranded In Sydney
(Received 11.30 a.m.) C SYDNEY, This Day. The “Daily Telegraph” says that scores of New Zealanders are stranded in Sydney on holiday. They have plenty of money, but it is New Zealand money, and it is now no use to them. " Speculators are meeting all ships from New Zealand and trying to drive hard bargains by purchasing New Zealand money for discount ranging up to 25 per cent. The New Zealand Government Trade Bureau is besieged each time a ship arrives from New Zealand by travellers wanting .to know what to do with their money. Two schoolboys called yesterday, saying they were unable to get accommodation, as their money was rejected.
A bridal couple called bn Mr. W. Taylor, New Zealand Trade Commissioner, and said that they were stranded though they had plenty of their country’s money. New Zealand coins are being rejected by city firms and tram conductors. A transport department official said: “New Zealand, money is foreign money in this country. Conductors realise that coins may suddenly be depreciated, and you cannot blame them for looking ' after their own interests.”
Mr. Taylor said that New Zealanders in difficulty here are those who did not heed the advice given them on leaving for Australia. Travellers who acted through their banks are in no difficulty.
