Labour Wins Wakefield Seat

received 1 p.m.) ADELAIDE, This Day. The by-election for the Wakefield seat rendered vacant by the death of Mr C. A. S. Hawker in the Kyeema disaster, resulted in a gain for the Labour Party, Mr S. McHugh defeating the United Australia Party candidate, Mr R. L. Butler, by 6678 votes. Earlier this month, when polling showed a swing against him, Mr Butler said that it was caused by bickering and recrimination in the Federal Party. The flour tax was the final blow, he added. Mr Butler resigned the Premiership of South Australia to contest the Wakefield seat, which was regarded as art almost impregnable stronghold for the Government.
