Severe Earthquake In S. Island.
L Per Press Association. Copyright.] WELLINGTON. This Day, A severe earthquake was experienced in. (he South Island shortly before 5.30 this morning. No serious damage was reported. Press Association messages are as follows: DUNEDIN—A fairly severe earthquake v/as experienced at 5.25 this morning. There was no jolt, but a swaying movement for some moments. Many school bells were set ringing. INVERCARGILL. A prolonged earthquake shock was experienced throughout Southland at 5.23 this morning, the shake lasting approximately a minute. No damage is reported, though clocks were stopped. QUEENSTOWN.—The shake was most severe, and windows were broken and several chimneys were displaced, requiring demolition. TiMaRU.—An earthquake shock was felt here at 5.22 a.m.,‘but no dam-
age was reported. GORE—An earthquake of unusual severity, sufficient to , sway buildings, was experienced in the Gore district at 5.20 a.m. No damage is reported. ASHBURTON. —An earthquake shock, the first for many years, was felt at 5.24 a.m. There was a long quivering movement, preceded by a rumbling sound. A shop window was broken. HOKITIKA—An earthquake lasting several seconds was felt at 5.20 a.m. The shake was fairly heavy, but no damage occurred.
