Conciliation Efforts Fail
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day. No agreement could be reached when discussions took place before Mr M. J. Reardon, Conciliation Commissioner, to secure an award for employees at boxing and wrestling matches, cabarets, dance halls, skating rinks, and all outdoor places of amusement, including sporting events, where charges were made for admission.
After a short discussion, the workers’ assessors admitted that much of the work was intermittent, and agreed to drop their claims for annual holidays and weekly wages. Mr Walsh said that if the parties could agree on an hourly rate of wages, he believed that they could reach an agreement. The employers' assessor asked for exemption for racing clubs, trotting clubs, hunt clubs and agricultural and pastoral shows. As this was not agreed to, it was decided that the matters in dispute could be dealt with by negotiation between the oarties.
