Illness Prevalent In Whangarei

Whangarei doctors and chemists are being kept busy. With the measles scare abroad, many people at the first sign of illness jump to the conclusion that they have caught the prevailing complaint. High temperatures, a heavy feeling in the limbs, a discharge from the nose and perhaps sore eyes ..are the symptoms of many common ailments. A mild form of chicken-pox is also going about.. Chemists and medical men have some difficulty in diagnosing a complaint. Whether for measles or for chicken-pox the treatment is—bed. “Many people,” said a medical man this morning, “feel they cannot neglect their work to lie up with what they consider a minor illness. Yet often complete rest and warmth is the quickest, if not the only, way to a speedy recovery.” The Common Cold. Whilst colds are fairly common in Whangarei these days, the opinion was expressed this morning that these, though loosely described as “ ’flu,” savour little of influenza. Bed, warmth, drinks in large quantities—lemon drinks, water, any form of liquid, in fact—and a light milk diet form the treatment prescribed for most cases of common cold. Eat little, drink much, rest a lot and keep warm seem to sum up the advise given those who catch cold. “Of course,” a medical man remarked, “it is quite unnatural for people to catch cold—in fact, it’s quite unnatural for them to get ill at all, but insufficient sleep and nerve strain leave the body in a weakened condition and susceptible to any illness that is ‘going round.’ ”
