OBITUARY

Miss M. J. McKinley A well-known Kara family suffered a bereavement yesterday morning, in the death at her home of Miss Mary Jane McKinley. Confined to her bed a fortnight ago with a sudden indisposition, Miss McKinley seemed a few days afterwards to be on the road to recovery, but complications brought on a serious illness, from which she did not recover. The late Miss McKinley, who was 47 years of age, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs M. McKinley, and spent all her life in the Kara district. Although of a retiring disposition, finding her greatest happiness in Ijer own homo and family, she was a well-known musician at Kara social functions until about 10 years ago. She was also a keen supporter of the Kara Women’s Institute. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters. Misses Margaret and Emily McKinley, and three brothers, Messrs T. W. McKinley, James and R. J. McKinley, all of Kara. The funeral took place at Maunu cemetery this afternoon. Mr. Maughan Barnett [Special to “Northern Advocxte.” 3 CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The death occurred suddenly, at Christchurch, early yesterday morning, of Mr. John Maughan Barnett, organist and choirmaster at Christchurch Cathedral. and formerly for 19 years City Organist of Auckland. Mr. Barnett, who was 71 years of age, went to Christchurch in April, 1937, to succeed Dr. J. C. Bradshaw in the direction of the Cathedral music. He lately suffered an attack of influenza, but had recovered, and his death was wholly unexpected. Mr. Barnett was bom at Leamington, Warwickshire, in 1867. and came to New Zealand in 1893 as organist and choirmaster of Napier Cathedral. Mr. Barnett was twice married, and is survived by his second wife and three daughters.
