News of the Day

Record Crowd at Benefit Ball Last Night. Probably the biggest crowd ever accommodated in the Town Hall for a similar function supported the Bargain Stores’ benefit ball last evening. Eight hundred people were on the floor, the takings at the door exceeding £45. All ticket returns have not yet been made, but it is estimated that the Tikipunga Orphanage building fund will benefit to the extent of £ 100 as a result of the effort. That such a record crowd turned out in spite of the appalling weather conditions is tribute to the fact that Whangarei appreciated the efforts of the organisers to assist a worthy cause.

Coats Missing From Ball-room. Ten overcoats were reported missing from the Town Hall after the ball last night. Most of these are stated to have disappeared from seats in the hall or from the cloakrooms. In one case, a new leather overcoat of considerable value mysteriously disappeared, and no trace of it has been found. Among the patrons at the hall was an ex-prizefighter who also reports having lost an overcoat. What would have happened had this man met the person who took his coat can only be imagined. I * * * * ' Property Sold. Mr A. Logan has sold his house property in Redan Road, Kaitaia, to the Bank of New Zealand. It is to be used as a residence for the local bank manager. Mr Logan is retaining a vacant section adjoining and has purchased the residence formerly owned by Mr Smeaton in the same street. * * * * Harbour Board Meeting Postponed. The monthly meeting of the Whangarei Harbour Board, which was to have been held today, was postponed until next Thursday. , 5 * * >'f Brilliant Football Save. With the Wairohia Stream, flowing close to one sideline and almost bursting its banks, kicking the ball out of touch was not favoured during the North Auckland Rugby trial match played at Rugby Park No. 3 ground yesterday. On several occasions the ball was retrieved from the swollen creek only with the greatest difficulty and at some risk to officials or players. Once it was only their fleet-footedness which saved Masters and Cunningham having to dive to the rescue. Leaping the fence after a high punt, they arrived to see the ball floating rapidly to sea, but in a quick defensive burst they sprinted to a point, where, one supporting the other, they made abrilliant save. « « « *

Note of Warning to Farmers, “I feel the Fax-mers’ Freezing Company is not getting enough support,” said the chairman. Mr D. A. Finlaycon, during his annual report to the Maungaturoto Dairy Company yesterday, “and there are too many farmers selling stock in the paddock without reference to where the stock will be killed. Killings at Moerewa have fallen off considerably, and I wonder if you all realise what the closing of Moerewa would do? Although there are other 'works in the district, x'f it were not for the Farmers’ Freezing Company, freezing rates would be considerably higher and competition for stock in the paddock considerably less."
