Indians Extended At Dunedin
[per Press Association. Copyright .l DUNEDIN, This Day.
A clear sky and bright sunshine greeted the Indian hockey players at Carisbrcok Parle on Saturday, when they mot a combined New Zealand University eleven and beat them by two goals to one.
The ground was affected by heavy frost overnight and became soft, the central portion being particularly sticky. The game was a fairly even one. the New Zealanders making a gallant tight of it. India did a lot more attacking, clever stick work and positional play giving them the advantage time after time.
Sturdy defence by Hercus, the home goalie, and Hogben, left-back, alone kept the score down. Hercus, who sustained an injury over an eye, attention to which held up play on two occasions for several minutes, was as solid as a rock.
On the other hand, India’s goalie, Abrahams, had little to do throughout, the turbaned Gurnarain Singh and Hussain taking the brunt of the attack. The Indian forwards were much too tricky and knew each other’s play better, Shahabuddin, Ahmad Khan and Fernandez repeatedly exchanging pretty passes; but they had little or nothing the better of Lawry, Aldred, Walton and Braithwaite so far as pace and determination were concerned. Altogether, the play of the visitors was not as brilliant as was expected, and only occasionally was there a sparkling interlude. A large crowd watched the match.
