Occasional statements by loading members of the New Zealand Society of Accountants on the importance of research work to the community have been well heeded by the Auckland branch, which has formed a study group. The principal objects arc;— (a) To foster and promote debates, discussions, and other forms of public speaking among its members. fb> To promote technical lecture-' by members and discussions thereon. (c) To promote and encourage technical research and post-graduate work in accountancy. The subjects chosen for special study are of a kind which should appeal to many people in business and professional life. Here are six of them:— (1) Factory Cost Accounting: adaptation of general principles to particular types of undertakings. (2) Compilation of simple, yet efficient. sets of books of account for professional men, legal, medical, dental, etc. (3) Public finance and taxation; to discuss individual local body accounts in detail, and later national accounts, public authorities, taxation, etc. (4) Accountancy systems of hirepurchase and time-payment trading and finance companies. (5) Valuation of shares and assessment of commercial goodwill. (ft) Stock Exchange practice and accounts. At regular intervals during the year general group meetings will be held, for the purpose of receiving and discussing reports of the sub-groups, embodying the results of their research. It te also proposed to include in the programme later in the year a publicspeaking contest.
