Fast Game At Springfield
The Springfield v. Mangapai match played at Springfield was a fast and interesting game, fought throughout in a good sporting spirit. Springfield held the lead by the only goal scored after 10 minutes’ play until the last four minutes when Mangapai equalised. Faulty shooting by the Mangapai forwards cost them a point. Springfield's goal was scored by Palmer from a difficult angle after a long pass had been sent down-field. Mangapai backs were well up and Palmer raced through to score a brilliant goal. Springfield’s forward movements were held up on the left wing by dallying tactics. Mangapai fought hard to get on even terms, Springfield backs were obliged to hit out on several occasions for safety. When the equalising goal was registered by W. Ormandy it looked as if goals were easy to get. He was nicely placed and unmarked when a short pass was sent to him and he scored without effort. The ground was very soft and water-logged and made good ground play almost impossible. Nevertheless the game was fast throughout.
The umpires were Messrs A, J, Magee and P. Whittle.
