Girl On Statue Angers Cingalese

Publication of a picture of an English girl Anno ITollick. sitting in the lap of a statue of Buddha, has caused a sensation in Ceylon.

There have been stormy protests, and disorders are feared.

The picture was taken at Anuradhapara, the ruined city of Ceylon, and its capital from 437 B.C. to A.D. 750. Thousands of letters of protest have poured in to the Government. A meeting of the State Council, held at Kandy, demanded Government action to protect the sacred monuments and temples which vie in beauty with those of Babylon and Nineveh. Publication of the photograph was described at the meeting of State councillors as “a wanton insult.”
