Local Body Amalgamation
[Per Press Association. Copyright . 3 WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, referring in the Address-in-Reply Dehate, to the Local Body Amalgamation Bill, said he had received some criticism of this measure during the debate. He was not afraid to meet lodal body representatives on their own ground and discuss the provisions of the bill with them. When he embarked on the question of local body amalgamation, he reaalised difficulties that were in the way, and he wanted the assistance of local bodies themselves in solving them. He said that the hearing of evidence on the matter would be continued by the committee set up for that purpose until such, time as the committee should reach conclusions to be laid before the House. There was not a single local body, he said, who did not hold the opinion that reform was necessary, and he could assure members of the House there wtes dire necessity for attention regarding amalgamation of local bodies cf this country.
fjpHE Wellington Stock Exchange has received a cablegram from the Melbourne head office of the Commercial Bank of Australia, announcing that at a meeting of shareholders on August 18 the directors will recommend a dividend for six months at the rate of four per cent, per annum on preference shares, and 7i per cent, per annum on ordinary shares, payable in Australian currency.
