Fierce Fight Against Federal Health Insurance
(Received 8.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 27. The Federal Government is meeting with tremendous opposition to its national health insux’ance bill, now before the House of Representatives. The Ministx’y is being harrassed by demands for concessions from all quarters. The main opposition comes from medical practitioners, who arc demanding an inci’ease of the capitation fee from 11/- to at least 14/-. The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, has hinted that he intends to accept the challenge by the doctors, who have decided to conduct a plebiscite in order to ascertain whether they will work under the Government’s plan. The British Medical Association forecasts an 80 per cent vote against the Government.
The Labour Party is openly hostile to the bill, declaring that it does not go far enough.
