Australian, N.Z. Agricultural Problems

The Now Zealand representatives to the Australian Agricultural Council, the Hen. W. Lee Martin. Minister of Agriculture, and Mr A. H. Cockayne, Director-General of Agriculture, were warmly welcomed to the council by the chairman, the Acting-Minister of Agriculture, Mr A. G. Cameron. “In inviting the New Zealand Government to send to this meeting its Minister who is responsible for dealing with agricultural administration and agricultural questions,” said Mr Cameron, “the Commonwealth Government did so because it realised that, in its approach to many agricultural problems, it had much in common with the sister Dominion.” Exchange of Officers Advocated. Mr Cameron stressed the value of information and ideas, and concluded: “It is very appropriate, therefore, that a New Zealand Minister shoul'd bo present at our council, and we are exceedingly glad to see him and bid him welcome.” An exchange of officers between Australia and New Zealand to ensure that mutual problems were treated on a common basis was advocated by Mr Lee Martin in his reply. He assured the meeting that New Zealand would be glad to compare notes with the Commonwealth on matters affecting the two Dominions. Stud Sheep Exports From N.Z, Mr Lee Martin 'assured the conference that New Zealand would give the Australian authorities the fullest cooperation regarding the importation of stud sheep from the Dominion. Further inquiries, however, would have to be made, particularly concerning the position of certain societies. The conference adopted a recommendation that the New Zealand Department of Agriculture should be asked to arrange for the elimination of inferior animals from exports to Australia, insuring a supply of animals true to type. Further Review. The matter will be further reviewed when the New Zealand authorities have completed their inquiries. Mr Lee Martin and his colleagues were entertained at luncheon by the Prime Minister,. Mr Lyons.
