Pheasant goes to Cover in Boot Shop
"yyHANGAREI sportsmen wno have tramped tor hours scarcely seeing a feather, could hardly believe their eyes yesterday afternoon when a pheasant (lew above the main streets of the town and actually wool to cover in a boolshc-p. Entering Cameron Street from one of the by-ways near the lower end, the bird kept above the motor traffic for the whole length of the busy shopping centre and then, observing the right hand rule, turned into Bank Street. Here, almost on the corner, it made a forced landing, skidding along on its tail for several feet as its claws struck the smooth bitumen. The incident had been noticed by a man in blue who lias been doing a lot of route marching without much luck since the season opened. Seizing his chance, he pursued the bird into the shop, "arrested” it and took it m charge, tucked under bis arm to the police station. Although it is understood that several members of the force expressed willingness to adopt the waif, one actually suggesting it should be placed under probation in hif home, orders were given by the superior officer for its release. The pheasant was last seen winging towards Hoey's orchard and away from the rush of town life.
