Vivid Display Of Aurora Australis
{Special To “Northern Advocate’’] AUCKLAND, This Day.
One of the finest displays of the Aurora Australis over witnessed from Auckland was seen on Saturday
evening between 7.30 and 7.50 p.m. The phenomenon was best observed from Onehunga, a dull red being first noticed in the clouds in the southern sky, many people thinking this was a reflection of a fire. Ihe tint soon varied, however, and the display spread over the whole horizon and high up into the sky. The display faded
quickly. It is believed by local astronomers that the aurora was a recurrence of the magnificent display which had been visible all over the world at the end of January.
Other Places See It
A message from Now Plymouth states that a brilliant aurora display was evidenced in the southern sky on Saturday evening. Dunedin also reports a bright display which ji t up the sou (hern sky between 7.50 and 8 p.rn. on Saturday. At one stage the colour resembled the reflection of a large fire against a cloudbank. It was not until 10 p.m. that the last red shade had disappeared.
